From jeans to a skirt...I finally did it....

I have had these jeans for quite a while now and day before yesterday I decided to give a shot to turning them into a skirt. I got the jeans on clearance for $2.97 a pair. They were regularly $36.99 each, and it takes two pairs to make a full length skirt. I am fairly handy with the sewing machine, but this is just something I have never tried. Finally, i decided to give it a go. I was not too thrilled with the hearts on this pair of jeans, but when the skirt was done, it actually looked very cute. And the jeans were already flared at the bottom, so when it was all sewn together as a skirt, the bottom flared out nicely. I decided to use a seam ripper and keep this skirt finished looking. And as you can see, I had a little helper as well. While I was working on sewing, Nathan decided to hop up to the table and use the seam ripper...he must have been watching me earlier. It was too cute, so I had to shap a few shots.
Overall, it was very easy. Because I kept them seams, it was a little more work lining everything up perfectly and sewing through the thickness caused by the old and new seams. But it worked out just fine and I really like the completed project. I tried it on..and it come right almost to the ground. It looks really good though for a first time try at something. I was pleased.

Great job, I love it!! I think the hearts are cute and give a nice touch. You are such a super shopper!! 6 bucks for a great jean skirt is a steal!! I have done this making knee-length skirts out of one pair of jeans, but not yet a full-length one, though I have always wanted too. My question for you is--since you kept the seams in, where did you sew the pieces together to fill the gap, on the seam or on the side of it, since with the seam it would be super thick. Hope that question made sense. Thansk for sharing!

Jenny...I sewed right along the seam...maybe 1/8 of an inch over from the very edge to still catch the folded under part unerneath...does that makes sense. The insert pieces, I just layed underneath and then pinned them together, and then sewed right along the seams that were there from the jeans. Yes, it was very thick to sew over in some areas. Especially the very bottom where I folded the seam over. But I have a pretty nice sewing machine that was able to handle it. And it gives it a much cleaner finish. I will say, that is what took the most time, but I like the finished look a lot in this skirt. It took a lot more precise sewing and pinning but it was well worth it in the end I think. I hope that answers your question

Wow, that skirt looks so great!! What a wonderful job you did! I'll have to ask you in person how you made the triangles in the center of the "patch" portion... I can't understand if that was already part of the other pair of jeans or if you made it yourself. It looks so nice, I'm even more motivated to try this myself now! Thanks for sharing!

So cute Kristi! You always inspire me!!! I feel quite motivated to sew up some cute skirts, but I think I'll do some cloth baby wipes first! Best to wait 'til after the baby to make new clothes I think LOL!!!
