I am going to make this very short (or at least try). I typed up a very long update over on facebook and tried to post it here by copying and pasting, but for some reason blogger is not letting me do it. I really don't feel like typing it all out again...it was long. Anyhow..... Last Thursday Nathan (our 4 yr old) fell and broke his left elbow. Back in July he had broken his right elbow. But this time around, the break is much more serious and quite possibly could be requiring surgery to fix it. They are watching the bones for a week and then will make a decision next week whether or not surgery will be needed. The summary....is that right now the bones are aligned correctly in a splint. They CANT cast it because if they do, that risks moving those bones ever so slightly..and thus requiring surgery. Because it is soooo very important to maintain that alignment they have right now, they cannot take the splint off and risk those bones shifting even the slightest bit. Anything could cause those bones to become misaligned..from bumping the arm to something such as the muscles pulling. They would be more secure in a cast, but it is too risky to remove the splint right now. This next week is "critical" in determining the course of treatment for Nathan. And that is why it is such a challenge for us. we are to keep Nathan as calm and inactive as possible. Three year olds run, jump, play rough, and use their arms tons of course. All of these things would almost certainly cause those bones to shift and thus lead to surgery. Of course we would like to ask everyone to pray that those bones stay aligned and that he heals quickly. If he does end up having surgery, it is quite a major surgery on his little elbow which would almost guarantee some ever lasting effects with stiffness in that joint, etc. Please pray for Nathan throughout your week, whether it be morning, noon, or night. We are not complaining in any way, just trying to pass along info so people know specifically how to pray and what the need is. We know that it could be so much worse. So many kids are suffering more. We are so thankful for this sweet boy and what a blessing he is. We will update more next week when we know the plan.
